ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to identify the extent of IT integration among Malaysian SMEs, the significant environmental and organizational factors that affect IT integration, and the relationshipsbetween IT integration and the performance efficiencies of value chain activities. A study conducted on 106 SMEs discovered that the level of IT integration is limited to some functional areas only. IT integration is found to be greater in the support activities of the value chain. Higher levels of IT integration are found mainly in manufacturing companies, companies which produce high technological goods and services, companies with larger number of employees, and those with clear vision and mission objectives. Positive perceptions of management and employees toward computer technologies and systems are also found to result in higher IT integration levels. The overall correlation is significant to substantiate the hypothesis that higher levels of IT integration lead to better performance efficiencies in all functional areas.

Cet article tente d'évaluer l'intégration des technologies de l'information chez les petites et moyennes entreprises malaises, les facteurs environnementaux et structuraux qui ont un impact sur cette intégration, ainsi que les relations entre cette intégration et l'efficience des activités de chaînes de valeurs. Une étude portant sur 106 petites et moyennes entreprises a découvert que le niveau d'intégration des technologies de l'information est limité à quelques domaines fonctionnels seulement. Cette intégration est plus marquée dans les fonctions complémentaires de la chaîne de valeur. Les niveaux d'intégration les plus élevés se rencontrent dans les manufactures, les compagnies produisant des biens et des services de haute technologie, les compagnies avec davantage d'employés, ainsi que celles dotées d'une vision précise et d'objectifs clairs. On trouve également qu'une attitude positive de la part de la direction et des employés envers les techniques et systèmes d'informatique produit des niveaux d'intégration des technologies de l'information plus élevés. La corrélation globale est suffisante pour justifier l'hypothèse que des niveaux d'intégration plus élevés mènent à une meilleure efficience dans tous les domaines fonctionnels.
