ABSTRACT. This is the first study in a series aimed at strengthening research in the emerging field of Indigenous entrepreneurship. A literature survey revealed two dominant themes: the need to reconcile tradition with innovation and the need to understand how Indigenous world-views and values impact upon enterprise. Four relevant theoretical contexts guided an empirical investigation employing depth interviews with 40 selected opinion leaders representing two cultures: Indigenous Australian and American Indian. Data evaluation culminated in the formal articulation of a paradigm for Indigenous entrepreneurship research. Discussion focused on utility of the paradigm and future research directions.

SOMMAIRE. Il s’agit ici de la première d’une série d’études visant à consolider la recherche dans le domaine naissant de l’entrepreneuriat indigène. Une enquête bibliographique a révélé deux thèmes dominants: le besoin de réconcilier tradition et innovation, et le besoin de comprendre l’impact des perspectives et valeurs indigenes sur l’entreprise. Quatre contextes théoriques pertinents ont guidé une investigation empirique basée sur des entrevues en profondeur avec 40 prescripteurs choisis pour représenter deux cultures: aborigène australienne et amérindienne. L’évaluation des données a conduit à l’articulation d’un paradigme pour la recherche en entrepreneuriat indigène. La discussion se concentre sur l’utilité du paradigme et sur les futures directions de recherche.
