ABSTRACT. This paper begins with a discussion of small-scale reindeer herding and a move from this to “industrialized” reindeer husbandry during the early phase of sovietization in the 1920s. The paper then moves to the present to discuss the crisis in the industry as a result of the statewide transition to a market-based economy beginning in 1994 when the state enterprises of Esso and Anavgai were formally privatized. The paper then moves to the future exploring whether hope lies in re-introducing private small-scale herding.

SOMMAIRE. Cet article commence avec une discussion de l’élevage des rennes à petite échelle et de son passage à un élevage “industrialisé” durant la première phase de soviétisation dans les années 1920. La discussion portensuite sur la crise contemporaine de cette industrie, qui résulte de la transition générale vers une économie de marché en 1994, lorsque les entreprises d’état Esso et Anavgai ont été privétisées. Finalement l’article se tourne vers les espoirs qui peuvent être placés dans la réintroduction de l’élevage privé à petite échelle.
