ABSTRACT. Industry Canada has recently completed the first phase of an analysis of Canadian growth firms using a new longitudinal database over the period 1985 to 1999. Of the nearly 1.8 million net jobs created over this period, continuing hyper and strong growth firms, almost 7% of private sector firms in 1985, were responsible for creating nearly one million net jobs. Continuing small businesses were the principal engine of growth, more than offsetting the job losses among continuing large firms over this period.

Industrie Canada a récemment terminé la première phase d’une analyse des entreprises canadiennes en croissance à l’aide d’une nouvelle banque de données longitudinale couvrant la période 1985–1999. De presque 1,8 millions d’emplois créés durant cette période, les entreprises en exploitation continue à hyper-croissance et à forte croissance—représentant près de sept pour cent des firmes du secteur privé en 1985— étaient responsables de la création de presque un million d’emplois nets. Les petites entreprises en exploitation continue—le principal moteur de croissance—ont largement compensé les pertes d'emplois au sein des grandes entreprises durant cette période.
