ABSTRACT. Few small-island economies have a significant manufacturing sector. Building a competitive manufacturing sector can be observed in Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, the two island counties of Estonia. Until recently, these peripheral islands relied on agriculture, fisheries and food processing industries, but they are both gradually transforming themselves into predominantly tourism and resort locations with some expanding new sub-sectors of manufacturing. This process is examined in this paper with four case studies of some characteristic firms. Future prospects for manufacturing on these islands are also explored.

SOMMAIRE. Peu d’économies de petites îles possèdent une industrie de transformation appréciable. On peut observer le développement d’une industrie de transformation concurrentielle sur Saaremaa et Hiuumaa, les deux comtés insulaires de l’Estonie. Jusqu’à récemment, ces îles périphériques reposaient sur l’agriculture, la pêche et les industries alimentaires ; mais à présent elles s’orientent de plus en plus vers l’industrie du tourisme, tout en développant certains sous-sectors de l’industrie de transformation. Ce processus est illustré ici à l’aide d’une étude de cas portant sur quatre entreprises caractéristiques. Cet article se penche également sur l’avenir de la fabrication dans ces îles.
