ABSTRACT. This paper is based on an action research project which examined opportunities for small Caribbean firms to access high value-added, specialty niche markets in Canada and the USA. The project was conceived in the context of the Caribbean’s need to compete in globalized markets, and the results are intended to provide practical guidance for small business managers. The paper provides examples of niche markets, develops a model of the producer/market link, and discusses the role of various players in the market side of the model. Based on the results, recommendations are made for business owners and managers, and for public policy, to enhance the process of assessing and accessing high margin niche markets.

SOMMAIRE. Cet article est basé sur un projet de recherche appliquée étudiant les opportunités d’accès des petites entreprises antillaises aux marchés de produits différenciés à forte valeur ajoutée du Canada et des USA. Ce projet, qui a ses racines dans le besoin où se trouvent les Antilles de faire concurrence dans les marchés mondialisés, vise à offrir une orientation pratique aux petits entrepreneurs. Le présent article donne des exemples de marchés différenciés, développe un modèle du lien entre producteur et marché, et discute les divers rôles qui se jouent dans le secteur du marché. D’après les résultats obtenus, on adresse des recommandations aux propriétaires et aux directeurs d’entreprises, ainsi qu’à l’ordre public, afin d’améliorer le processus d’évaluation et d’accès aux marchés différenciés de haute marge.
