ABSTRACT. Building upon the resource-based view of the firm, this study presents an empirical test of the impact of strategic flexibility and technological resources on the performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A survey of small- and medium-sized manufacturing firms in the fabricated metal products sector found that synergy between strategic flexibility and technological resources had a positive and significant effect upon firm performance measured either by owners’ perception of overall performance or sales volume. The results indicated that SMEs should not only “have” technological resources but also be capable of using them to generate strategic options that help the firms maintain their competitiveness in the long run. At the same time, SMEs that possess strategic flexibility cannot fully recognize and maintain real options in positioning or repositioning itself in the markets without the use of complementary technological resources to create new innovations.

SOMMAIRE. Partant d’une conception de l’entreprise basée sur les ressources, cette étude présente un test empirique de l’impact de la flexibilité stratégique et des ressources technologiques sur la performance des petites et moyennes entreprises (PME). Une enquête sur des PME spécialisées dans la fabrication des métaux a découvert que la synergie entre flexibilité stratégique et ressources technologiques a un effet positif important sur la performance, mesurée par la perception du propriétaire ou bien par le volume des ventes. Les résultats indiquent que les PME devraient non seulement posséder des ressources technologiques, mais encore être capables de les utiliser pour générer des options stratégiques contribuant à maintenir une compétitivité à long terme. En même temps, les PME dotées de flexibilité stratégique ne peuvent ni reconnaître pleinement ni maintenir de véritables options pour se positionner ou se repositionner dans les marchés, sans faire usage de ressources technologiques complémentaires afin de créer des innovations.
