ABSTRACT. In small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), the leadership style of the top management can have a strong impact on the innovativeness and the performance of the firm. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of a particular leadership style, transformational leadership, on innovations, growth, and profitability. Drawing on a sample of 300 innovative SMEs from Carinthia (Austria), we analyzed a structural equation model (SEM), in which these constructs are linked (n=97). The results indicate that transformational leadership has a positive direct impact on innovation, growth and profitability. In addition to that, innovation positively impacts on growth and profitability. Our results indicate that transformational leadership might be an appropriate approach for the management of SMEs.

SOMMAIRE. Dans les petites et moyennes entreprises (PME), le style de direction des cadres supérieurs peut avoir un fort impact sur les facultés d’innovation et la performance de l’entreprise. Le but de cet article est d’analyser l’impact d’un style de direction particulier, la direction transformationnelle, sur les innovations, la croissance et la rentabilité. A partir d’un échantillon de 300 PME innovatrices de la Carinthie, en Autriche, nous avons analysé un modèle d’équation structurale (MES) dans lequel ces constructs sont liés (n=97). Les résultats indiquent que la direction transformationnelle a un impact positif direct sur l’innovation, la croissance et la rentabilité. De plus, l’innovation a une influence positive sur la croissance et la rentabilité. Nos résultats indiquent que la direction transformationnelle repésente peut-être une démarche appropriée pour la gestion des PME.
