ABSTRACT. Just how important is physical location as a source of small-firm advantage? In this paper we consider this question by testing the predictive validity of three classic perspectives: central-place theory, spatial interaction theory and the principle of minimum differentiation. In addition, we identify and test two managergrounded hypotheses focusing on locational continuity and transactional convenience. We test these hypotheses on a sample of small U.S. retail hardware stores and find significant support for central-place theory and both manager-grounded hypotheses.

SOMMAIRE. Quelle est l’importance exacte de l’emplacement comme source d’avantages pour les petites entreprises ? Notre article s’adresse à cette question en testant la validité prédictive de trois perspectives classiques : la théorie de la centralité, celle de l’interaction spatiale, et le principe de différenciation minimum. De plus, nous identifions et testons deux hypothèses fondées sur l’administration et qui se concentrent sur la continuité spatiale et la commodité transactionnelle. Après avoir testé ces hypothèses sur un échantillon de petites quincailleries de détail américaines, nous trouvons dans les résultats un soutien appréciable de la théorie de la centralité et des deux hypothèses fondées sur l’administration.
